real estate of the city

Real Estate of The City

Real Estate of the City was a fabrication and ensuing installation of a piece about housing issues. Adam Carr, Sarah Luther, and I looking at the scale of foreclosures and the footprint of this vacancy in Milwaukee.  There is around 4.8 million square feet of foreclosed property, or 110.2 acres.  This outline of the City of Milwaukee was CNC’d out of plywood (including a square “cut out” of the center of the City where City Hall currently is).  The plywood was finished in a shade of green to reflect the same plywood that is used for boarding up windows around town.  Then a single nail for each foreclosed house or property was driven into the outline of the City of Milwaukee.   Finally, the square represented the void was filled.
