Coopetition
The coopetition, hosted by beintween and Cream City Hens, is a local design/build competition inviting city folk to construct a full scale chicken coop. The idea for the coopetition was hatched to support Milwaukee's newly introduced ordinance (July 28, 2011), allowing residents to keep up to 4 hens within the city. The coopetition raises awareness for urban agriculture, promotes the reuse of salvaged/discarded materials, and challenges both designers and builders with a pragmatic + collaborative opportunity. It is open to the community and students alike. As opposed to most competitions, this is was not solely about design, but making. 7 full scale chicken coops were constructed; 3 designs voted on by an 9 person jury received cash prizes, while each of the runners up receiving a pair of baby chicks.
